Krystal Roy.

On my second to last day in Austin, all my shoots had to reschedule, and all my friends had left town. I was stuck in a city I hated with nowhere to go, nothing to do, and no one to see. Late in the afternoon, Krystal came back into town early, and showed me around some of her favorite places; Mozart’s Cafe, EZ’s Brick Oven & Grill, Red Bud Trail, and Zilker Park, where we took these photos.

Meredith McCarty – Pin Up

I met Meredith through my good friend Ivy Claire when I first stayed with her last year in Austin, TX. She’s an actress that lives at the 21st Street Co-op, not far from the University of Texas, and she rides a little blue moped everywhere. Each time I see her, she mentions how fun it would be to do a shoot together. This time I sent her some inspiration folders of shoots I wanted to do, and she was thrilled to do a shoot called “American Summer”. My first night in town, we hit up several vintage stores, looking for …

Krystal Roy.

Krystal and I took a Social Entrepreneurship class together. She was the cute girl who sat in front of me, and always had something to say. When I first talked to her, she told me how she originally went to school as a jazz trumpet player (an instrument I’ve always wanted to learn). We got to know each other when I would walk her home after class, and she told me about how stressful being an interior design major can be. She graduated last month, and has been looking to start her career. I saw her in Austin, TX, her …

Carra Sykes.

Carras Sykes is one rad chick. I had seen her work through Lauren Marek, and their adventures together. Carra is a talented photographer & graphic designer. You should check out her MOTHER + DAUGHTER series. We met up around noon, on 6th Street in Austin, TX. We ate pizza and got to know each other, talking about photo gigs, design work, music, and the Marek sisters. Days before we met, I texted her “Purely hypothetical, but if I were to cover your face and arms with stickers for a portrait, what kind of sticks should they be? P.S. They don’t …

Brittany Long.

Brittany Long has been a fan of my photography for a long time, and has won my annual Christmas print giveaway three years in a row. When I said I was going to visit Houston & Austin, she offered to show me around her neck of the woods. I wasn’t having a very good day when we met, since Houston is a hellhole of inescapable traffic. I was napping on a park bench outside an art museum when she found me. We kept getting lost while driving around Houston, so ultimately we decided to go to her hometown, Friendswood, TX. …

Lauren Marek.

In the garage below Lauren’s apartment, she has a small studio, complete with a very nice canvas backdrop, and several cheap lights resting on stands. We set up the studio, added my LED lights to the mix, put on some good music, and started taking pictures of each other. Towards the end of our shoot, I asked all the Marek sisters to come to the garage so I could take a photo of each of them.

Mary Marek.

Mary & I had some time to kill before Lauren got off work, so we decided to do another quick shoot. I helped her pick out an outfit for a shoot in the woods, and she ended up dressing more like Lauren. Something she would never do otherwise. I told her she looked like a badass. She directed me to a park on the other side of town, where Lauren takes the same picture of John, their youngest brother, year after year. We walked to the back of the park, and I asked Mary to climb on top of a …

Mary Marek – Teen Queen.

I’ve wanted to do a photoshoot with Lauren Marek’s little sister, Mary, for years & years. When I was talking to Lauren about visiting her hometown of Bellville, she asked if I wanted to do a shoot with Mary while I was down there. I jumped at the opportunity. I remembered a photo Lauren took of her after she’d won Austin County Fair Queen, and I thought it’d be fun to do something similar. So the night before I left Fort Worth, I made a trip to the craft store to make her a gold wire crown, and a sash …

Erica & Lexi McStay.

Erica has been one of my favorite models for a long time, and her little sister, Lexi, has been a great model & photography student. Anytime Erica comes back into town I’m always so delighted to get to photograph these two gorgeous gals again. For this particular photo adventure we began by taking portraits in my studio. The first shoot for my book Portraits: A Field Guide. Afterward Erica wanted photos of her floating in the water while wearing a flowy dress. Unfortunately she forgot to pack her flowy dresses, and after an unsuccessful trip to Thrift Town we went …
